About TheCalcNerd
TheCalcNerd is a small, independent project built and maintained by Hugo Cardozo. The goal is simple: free personal finance calculators that show the actual math behind the number, instead of a black box you're supposed to trust.
Why this site exists
Most "calculator" sites online either hide their formulas entirely or bury a useful tool under walls of ads and required signups. TheCalcNerd takes the opposite approach — every calculator comes with a plain-English explanation of the formula it uses, a worked example with real numbers, and answers to the questions people actually ask about that topic. No signup, no email wall, no spreadsheet download required — just open a calculator and get your answer.
How each calculator is built and verified
Every formula on this site is first implemented and hand-verified in a standalone script with realistic default inputs before it's ever written into a live calculator, and the same worked example appears in both the calculator's results and its accompanying guide so you can check the math yourself. Where a calculator depends on official figures that change over time — IRS contribution limits, Social Security wage bases, and similar — those numbers are checked directly against current government sources (irs.gov, ssa.gov) rather than relied on from memory, and each page notes when it was last updated.
